Field notesRarity

PocketPetal rarity levels, from Common to Mythic

Every catch rolls a rarity the moment you make it. Here are the real odds, what “about 1 in 333” means, and what each tier is worth.

Plate IThe odds

Six rarity levels, one roll per catch.

Each catch rolls its rarity once, the moment you make it, with the odds in the table. They're the same for every plant: a dandelion and an orchid have the same chance of rolling Mythic.

The rarer the roll, the bigger the reveal. Anything Uncommon or better gets its own headline, from “Uncommon Find!” up to “Mythic!”, and a burst of confetti.

Odds per catch Rolled once for every catch. Same for every plant.
TierChanceAboutIn 1,000 catches
Common60%3 in 5600
Uncommon25%1 in 4250
Rare10%1 in 10100
Epic3.5%1 in 2935
Legendary1.2%1 in 8312
Mythic0.3%1 in 3333

Rarity is a game mechanic. It doesn't reflect how rare a plant really is, or its conservation status.

Plate IIReading the odds

What does “about 1 in 333” mean?

It's an average over a lot of catches. Every roll is separate: nothing builds up between catches, and the game doesn't keep count. You could roll Mythic twice in a row, or go a thousand catches without one.

So your 333rd catch isn't due to be a Mythic. After 333 catches, the chance you've rolled at least one is about 63%. The table shows how the chances add up for the rarer tiers.

Plate IIICatching again

Catch it again, roll it again.

Rarity belongs to the catch, not the plant. Catch the same species again, even the same bush, and it rolls fresh.

Your collection shows the best rarity you've rolled for each species, with the photo from that catch, and the plant's page keeps every photo you've taken of it. Each catch uses one of your daily catches and earns its own XP.

Plate IVLuck

Rarity is luck, not botany.

The roll knows nothing about the plant. It doesn't reflect the species, how common the plant is where you live, or its conservation status. A Mythic dandelion is still a dandelion, and a Common catch can be a plant you've never seen before.

That's also why nothing ranks rarity. PocketPetal's Game Center leaderboards rank species collected and longest streak, and the rarity badges aren't Game Center achievements.

Subscriptions don't change the odds either. PocketPetal+ and Pro give you more catches a day, not better rolls.

Plate VXP

How rarity affects XP.

Each catch earns 25 XP for a species you've never caught, or 5 for one you have, plus a bonus for its rarity. A new species that rolls Mythic is worth 275 XP before anything else is added.

Stars add up to 25 more, and your first catch of the day adds 5 when it keeps your streak going. Tap the XP on any result to see the breakdown.

Plate VIStars

Stars: the other roll.

Each catch also rolls a quality rating from 1 to 5 stars, separately from its rarity. Stars are luck too. They don't judge your photo, and they say nothing about the plant.

Your very first catch always gets 5 stars. In your collection, each species shows the most stars you've rolled for it, and a species with 5 stars gets a gold frame.

Plate VIIRarity badges

Seventeen badges for rarity.

They count species, not catches: each species counts at the best rarity it has rolled in your collection, so a re-catch that rolls higher can complete one. Each pays XP when you earn it.

Questions

The rest of the game is in the guide to playing. Or write to [email protected].

What are the rarity levels in order?

From most common to rarest: Common (60%), Uncommon (25%), Rare (10%), Epic (3.5%), Legendary (1.2%) and Mythic (0.3%).

Which is rarer, Epic or Legendary?

Legendary. An Epic rolls 3.5% of the time and a Legendary 1.2%, so a Legendary is nearly three times rarer.

What’s above Legendary?

Mythic, the top of the six rarity tiers. It rolls 0.3% of the time, four times rarer than Legendary, and nothing ranks above it.

What are the odds of catching a Mythic?

0.3% on every catch, or about 1 in 333. After 333 catches, the chance you've had at least one is about 63%.

Does the kind of plant change the odds?

No. Every plant has the same odds. Rarity has nothing to do with the species.

Do subscribers get better odds?

No. PocketPetal+ and PocketPetal Pro give you more catches a day, not better odds.

Can I catch a plant again for a better rarity?

Yes. Every catch rolls again, and your collection keeps the best rarity you've rolled for each species.

Does Mythic mean the plant is rare in real life?

No. Rarity is a game mechanic. It doesn't reflect how rare a plant really is, or its conservation status.

Before you head out: PocketPetal is a game, and rarity says nothing about a real plant. Plant names come from image recognition and are often wrong. Never eat, touch or use a plant because of what the app says.
